On the continuum. The reductionist–holistic axis approximates how deep into biology versus how far out into meaning and culture each tradition locates personality. As with the realism axis in the companion psychiatry table, this single ordering conflates several distinctions — biological reduction, dispositional vs. interactionist commitments, and nomothetic vs. idiographic methodology — that are not perfectly correlated. Placement reflects each tradition's central tendency rather than any individual theorist.

On Big Five vs. Five-Factor Theory. Goldberg's lexical Big Five (row 7) and McCrae & Costa's Five-Factor Theory (row 3) are often used interchangeably but make different claims. The lexical Big Five is a descriptive taxonomy from natural-language adjectives, agnostic about causes. FFT adds a strong biological-causal model in which traits are endogenous "basic tendencies" largely insulated from environment and channeled into "characteristic adaptations." Treating them as a single row would obscure this disagreement — and obscure why a critic of FFT's biology claim (e.g. on the role of life events) need not be a critic of Big Five structure.

On HEXACO vs. the Big Five. HEXACO is not just Big Five + 1. Agreeableness and Emotionality are rotated relative to FFM Agreeableness and Neuroticism, so anger and temperamentalness sit with Agreeableness in HEXACO rather than with Neuroticism. Honesty-Humility correlates so strongly with the inverse of the Dark Triad (latent r ≈ .95; Hodson et al., 2018) that the two are nearly indistinguishable constructs.

On the person–situation debate. Mischel's (1968) critique anchors most rows below the descriptive taxonomies. Whole-trait theory (row 12) and CAPS (row 13) are both explicit reconciliations — but Fleeson keeps the Big Five as the unit of analysis (traits as state distributions), while Mischel and Shoda dissolve traits into if–then signatures. They are compatible in spirit but not interchangeable.

On what counts as a "trait." Even within trait theory, definitions diverge: McCrae & Costa treat traits as dimensions of individual differences in the tendency to show consistent patterns of thought, feeling and action; Wiggins pressed the case that trait ascriptions summarise observed regularities rather than explaining them, and so require scientific explanation instead of supplying it; Wakefield analyses traits as stabilities in intentional states. Each row's structure cell should be read as the tradition's working answer rather than a settled definition of the construct.
